US Soccer’s Bio-Banding Initiative

Post by Uncleof05AP on 4/5/2018, 11:57 pm

United States Soccer recently announced a bio-banding initiative:  U.S. Soccer Bio-Banding Initiative.   I will be curious to see if this is actually implemented by North Texas. Thoughts?

Solar's DA program just had the US Soccer rep. come this week to measure all the athletes. This will determine a group to be selected and go to Austin, I think, to train the 3rd weekend of April. We as parents had the opportunity to elect or reject participation. I elected, they gathered info on both myself and my wife and then came to measure our kids.

This doesn't fix the problem. The problem is the identification and training of the players. This only addresses the physical attributes but doesn't deal with the lack of training most of the players receive.

Every club in NTX says they will develop the kids and players can move up as they progress. Unfortunately, all teams in each club are essentially left on their own to be developed by the coach. There is no overall club plan that is utilized so each team can receive the same training. Most teams play boot ball and look for the win.

Until clubs are willing to sacrifice the immediate wins and truly develop players, we will continue to be behind the rest of the world.

Some good background on the English guy that brought the idea to the US Soccer Federation:

https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2018/apr/10/james-bunce-bio-banding-initiative

In the example, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain played down a year in Southampton's academy. Once he matured, he was good enough to play up.

And, apparently this is already allowed in the DA. "In the Development Academy, clubs have the ability to nominate late maturing players who are able to play with an age group below their chronological designation so that they are able to thrive and not struggle with physicality." DA clubs can already be doing what Southampton did for Oxlade-Chamberlain, so this biobanding initiative is really the second pass at trying to find opportunities for less developed players.

Quote is from the last paragraph here:
