I'm not entirely sure but from what I know , they cannot. I believe the main issue is "heading rule". Which the 2008s would be allowed to header next fall.

That has been the rule for some time. U10s cannot play up into u11 in NTSSA (USYS) leagues. So that rules out Arlington Plano or Classic.

You can do it in Primetime (US Club Soccer).

The comp level in Primetime is a mixed bag year to year. When the '06's were U11, there were numerous Classic D1 and D2 teams registered there as well, in addition a few of the top '07 teams played up. Many teams used it to get there subs more playing time. This year for the '07s nobody of note signed up so I'd say the level is PPL 2 at best. Not sure exactly what drives this however their league fee is almost as much as Classic which is double the U10 average.

If this isn't a US Soccer policy, what is preventing North Texas from permitting the kids to play up from Academy to Select? Seems like this would be a great time for the NTX board to address the development pyramid and allow kids to play all the way up. Not only does this prevent kids from playing up and their development, but it also disrupts teams that are moving up and lose their younger players.

This is one of NTSSA's favorite rules. To change a rule like this, the NTSSA rec association presidents would have to vote for the change. Why would rec associations vote for it? Why would they vote to allow u6 to play u7 academy? Why would they vote for any rule that "steals" players from their rec teams? If they lose players, they lose funding, fields (depending on the city), votes on NTSSA rule changes, etc. In NTSSA, u10's are allowed to play u11 rec, so NTSSA isn't opposed to playing up.

A couple of years ago, JM with NTSSA tried to tell me that the members of the Competitive Comittee told him that clubs like the rule. If they don't present the rule change for a vote, who in NTSSA will?

I'll kick the tires at NTSSA and see what I can find out. I spoke to someone at NTSSA a few months ago and someone told me the board is about 50/50 on this issue.

It doesn't matter what the NTSSA board members think, it would have to be presented as a bylaw change and voted on by the presidents of the 60+ rec associations in NTSSA. Good luck with that.

That's what I just found out and it boils down to the member organizations not wanting to lose their 20.00, 30.00, 75.00 or whatever amount they choose to charge for Academy registration from U10 kids. I asked my member organization if they'd bring it up to the NTSSA board and they just responded they do what NTSSA says. Sounds like a major cop-out and that it doesn't give the Academy kid a better chance at development. The reason provided was the academy kid has the opportunity to play on multiple teams, but locks down to one team once signing a select contract - going so far to say it benefits the club too much and not the player.

I countered with shouldn't that option be in the player/parent's best interest? It's not really an option if there is only one path in North Texas Player development. That's when I was notified that its up to an association's president to bring it up and this one in particular would not.

I am really interested to know how many kids play up and would continue if given the opportunity - how much money is really at stake?

There is not an argument you can make that they have not already heard. Rec associations need players for money and votes on NTSSA bylaw changes.

i coach an 08 boys independent club/team and most of my boys started in rec together since they where u6's. So when out team was formed we had a mix of 08/09 together, well since the pure age change my 09s including my son has played up. I think this benefits the boys being able to do this. playing up at th is age Lets them play against boys a lil bigger a little stonger and faster and allows them to play at this level. Next fall i will not be able to let my boys play or comepte in any of the ntssa leagues so we will be sticking it out in primetime for another full year, kind is a bummer tho.
